Film al-Fatiha 1453 is one of the oldest tragedy plays in Arabic theater. The play was first performed by Almohads at their court in Marrakesh on 23 February, 1453. The story of the play is an allegorical one with something for everyone to love, including the love al-Ghadir bint Abdelhakim, who was loved by many princes but had no say in her own fate. When asked about her opinion on this subject, Fatima said that it’s “hard to talk about freedom when you are bound hand and foot” because of social limitation. And in one of her interview she also said that “before, when I was in the Netherlands, I used to make films with themes like freedom and women’s rights, but when I came to Indonesia, no one wanted to make them; they were too sensitive.” Al-Fatiha 1453 is made in 2009. A year later, Fatima mentioned during the discussion for "Hikayat Cinta Kasih" (Tale of Love) that she has difficulties finding an actress with an age around 20-25 years old since there are few young actresses. The Indonesian actress, Fadiyah Abdullah, plays a major role in the movie. The movie was released in 2011 and it is based on a German play by Gina Motagui, "Das Lied von der Erde". The film has a strong social message that also explores the Indonesian Constitution and issues concerning women through what was once a simple story about love. However, there were some differences between the original version of the play and the film.In this film Fatima plays as a woman who is torn between two husbands as she does not know which one would be better for her to stay with. This move is both controversial and thoroughly debated because of Fatima's sexual orientation. The film was released in 2012.Fatima's first English-language drama, "Grain of Sand" is based on the love story of Hassan, a Bangladeshi man who is forced to flee his village after being caught looking at pictures of naked women. "Grain of Sand" tells the true story of Hassan's journey to America, where he hopes to find work and secure his future for his family. The play was received well and brought Fatima more international attention: "The play was great and Fatima Sultana as Nasima (the mother) captured the emotions and reactions with such ease. Fatima played Mahbubah in "Samanta", which was based on a true story. The film was screened at many international film festivals, including the 35th Directors Fortnight at the Cannes International Film Festival where it won "Best Actress Award".
